What is Representational Harm?

Representational harm is a specific category of social harm where an AI system reinforces harmful stereotypes, creates cultural insensitivity, or unfairly subordinates specific social groups through the way it portrays or speaks about them.

This type of harm often occurs in Generative AI systems—for instance, when an image generator consistently portrays members of a certain profession as only one gender, or when a Large Language Model (LLM) uses language that is unintentionally biased or culturally inappropriate. Unlike Allocative Harm (which affects resources) or Interpersonal Harm (which damages relationships), representational harm works over time to normalize and scale inaccurate, negative, or exclusionary portrayals. It is a fundamental ethical risk rooted in Data Bias that must be mitigated by active human review of AI-generated content.
